Il Giardinetto

Fifty-year-old Italian institution founded by photographer Leopoldo Pomés. Interior garden, cocktail bar, live piano, and a carbonara that honours the Roman original. Gathering place of the Gauche Divine.

The Delekta Review

Il Giardinetto was founded in 1974 by the photographer Leopoldo Pomés, and it still feels like walking into the mind of someone who cared as much about atmosphere as about food. The interior recreates a garden — an urban oasis designed by architects Milà and Correa, inspired by the chestnut trees of southern France. Chef Francis Santos has been in the kitchen since 1988; maître Ángel Fernández since 1986. That kind of continuity is rare anywhere, and you feel it in the carbonara (the real Roman version), the ou en panet (unmissable), and the paccheri with tomato and burrata. The cocktail bar at the entrance pours excellent dry Martinis. There's live piano in the evenings. The Pomés siblings — Juliet, Poldo, and Ivan — run it now as a second-generation family affair, and they've kept its identity as the gathering place of Barcelona's cultural class. Only restaurant to win the FAD Interior Design Prize twice.
