Bar Mendizábal

Standing Bar Tapas · El Raval, Barcelona · €

Standing-bar in El Raval, a few steps from La Rambla. Tortilla sandwiches, Andalusian fried calamari, spinach beignets with honey, giant Gordal olives. Classic vermut at local prices. Small, authentic, often with a queue.

The Delekta Review

Bar Mendizábal on Carrer de la Junta de Comerç in El Raval was once just a hole-in-the-wall — its 'interior' was the tiny Plaça del Canonge Colom outside. Now it has a covered indoor space, but the terrace remains the point: standing-bar energy in a Raval square where Barcelona's street life plays out around you. The patatas bravas — served with a smoky paprika sauce — draw comparisons to the canonical Tomás version, which in Barcelona is the highest bravas praise possible. The lamb sandwich is properly good. Vermut is among the city's best. Mojitos at 5€, nachos at 4€. Sandwich fillings include ham with goat cheese and balsamic, salmon with avocado and wasabi, feta with dried tomato and anchovy. Some reviews report unwelcoming staff — this is a bar not aimed at tourists, and the charm is in the grit. This IS deep Raval, and the prices reflect it. A bar where the experience is the atmosphere, and the food — surprisingly — holds its own.
