El Bar Mut on Carrer de Pau Claris is the Eixample's most sophisticated tapas bar — over 300 wines including Krug and Cristal, daily specials on blackboards, and a marble counter that is the best seat in the house. The well-heeled neighbourhood crowd treats it as its living room. The egg carpaccio is the house signature. Fried eggs with prawns, wood-oven scallops, braised oxtail, and Palamós prawns from the daily specials show a kitchen working with premium ingredients. Galician cockles and jamón ibérico de bellota are staples. The wine programme is the real draw: a list this deep at a tapas bar is unusual. Prices are premium — lunch solo runs 46 euros, dinner can reach 70 to 80. The cooking earns the price most of the time; the occasional burnt scallop is the honest caveat. Others describe it as effortlessly classy. The truth is probably both: expensive tapas that is usually very good, occasionally inconsistent, and always atmospheric.
