Orvay

Mediterranean & Wine Bar · El Born, Barcelona · €€

Lively wine-focused space with stylish small plates. One of El Born's best natural wine bars.

The Delekta Review

Orvay sits directly across from the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar, which alone would recommend it, and backs that frontage with cooking serious enough to justify the address. It's the personal project of Vicente Orvay and Anabel Lázaro, built around market-fresh Mediterranean produce and a wine list heavy on by-the-glass pours. The curry croquettes are the signature; the squid stuffed with sobrassada makes the case for Balearic-Catalan cross-pollination; the steak tartare is cleanly cut and properly dressed. The room is lively without tipping into noisy, the service runs notably well for a Born wine bar, and the terrace picking up the basilica's afternoon light is one of the most pleasant sits in the neighbourhood. Prices run above standard tapas-bar territory — this is €€ creeping toward €€€ — but for seasonal plates with genuine technique and a front-row seat on one of Barcelona's great Gothic churches, the premium is honest.
