Cal Pep at Plaça de les Olles is theater. Pep Manubens and his team dispatch small plates of fried mixed seafood, baby clams on the plancha, and the house tortilla at a pace that leaves newcomers wide-eyed. There's no menu — you take a counter stool, trust the kitchen, and eat what arrives. It all arrives perfect. The counter seats are first-come-first-served and the queue forms before 1pm; arriving late means waiting or settling for the back room, which by every account loses the point. Prices have climbed significantly — €50+ per person is standard now, steep for tapas. A few long-time regulars suggest the place trades on reputation these days. They're wrong. The baby clams remain impeccable, the tortilla still quivers at the center exactly as it should, and the counter energy still makes you feel like you've been let in on something. Since 1988, and 50Best Discovery recognition for good reason.
