Madre Taberna Moderna

Tapas · Eixample, Barcelona · €€

Open since 2021

On Avenida Gaudí, where most kitchens coast on basilica foot traffic, Madre goes the other way. Leo Chechelnitzky took over the corner his mother Alexandra ran for three decades and built the project that opened his No Hay Mañana group.

The Delekta Review

The address has had three lives: Nazarovia (Barcelona's first Russian restaurant), then Intertapa from 1994, then Madre opened by the founder's son when his mother retired Leo Chechelnitzky also runs Babula Bar (Eixample Dret, cocktails and crudos) and Chamako (Poble Sec, Mexican-Asian) — Madre is the third venue and the origin point of the No Hay Mañana group

Carta of around 20 platillos plus a rotating off-menu — Cuarto Frío tapas, slow-cooked guisos, several arroces, all served midday to midnight, seven days a week

Order first: torrezno ibérico — slow-cooked, lacquered, structurally intact when it lands on the table Tortilla jugosa de patata con cebolla as runny as the name promises; arroz meloso negro with fried chipirones for the rice section Pushing further into Catalan tradition: canelón de butifarra with ceps and truffle béchamel; falso Wellington de croissant with beef tenderloin off-menu Wine list curated rather than assembled — national and international references chosen with intention

Terrace on Avenida Gaudí faces the basilica directly — one of the few in this stretch where the view is the actual reason to sit outside, not a marketing prop
