Pepe Simôes opened the original Bar Xalana on the Hospital Clínic corner in 1981; in 2006 he and his sons converted a nearby former mechanic shop into La Taverna del Clínic Toni Simôes (chef) trained at Santi Santamaria's El Racó de Can Fabes — named Catalonia's best young chef in 2014; brother Manu (sommelier) took the room until stepping back for health, with Toni's partner María Valverde co-running today 2014: expanded from 95 to 220 sqm with an open kitchen built around a 'French piano-style' Charvet cooking suite
