The Delekta Review

Behind a large unmarked door near the cathedral, Koy Shunka is widely considered Barcelona's finest Japanese restaurant — and one of the most affordable Michelin-starred Japanese restaurants anywhere in the world. One diner calculated it at roughly a quarter the price of Masa in New York and half that of L'Abysse in Paris. Chef Hideki Matsuhisa fuses Japanese precision with Mediterranean ingredients — Roses prawns, local tuna, Catalan mushrooms — using technique honed in Osaka. The U-shaped counter is where the experience happens: watching Matsuhisa work is mesmerising, and the fish-maturing cabinets visible from the dining room signal how seriously the sourcing is taken. Specific dishes draw consistent praise — sea urchin lifted by orange zest and ikura, Wagyu A5 tataki with caramelised soy and morel rice, cauliflower and octopus with truffle. The Michelin star has been held since 2013 — more than a decade of consistency. At this price-to-quality ratio, Koy Shunka may be the single best value among Barcelona's starred restaurants.
