Can Culleretes

Traditional Catalan · Barri Gòtic, Barcelona · €€€

Barcelona's oldest restaurant (est. 1786 — Guinness confirmed). Set lunch outstanding value. Escudella, fideuà and crema catalana are benchmarks.

The Delekta Review

Can Culleretes has been serving in a quiet corner of the Barri Gòtic since 1786 — Barcelona's oldest restaurant, Guinness-confirmed and Spain's second-oldest, on Carrer dels Quintana. The dining rooms are a time capsule: wood panelling dark with varnish, framed photographs of visiting celebrities going back a century, tile floors worn smooth. The menu is traditional Catalan to its bones — escudella in winter, botifarra amb mongetes, fideuà negra, espinacs a la catalana, crema catalana bruléed to order. The set lunch is outstanding value and the format hasn't meaningfully changed in a long time. Honest caveat: the cooking is solid rather than revelatory, and the restaurant trades heavily on its history. But the history is real, the building is a document, and for escudella in a dining room that was serving Barcelona before Barcelona had a city plan, Can Culleretes delivers something no new restaurant in the city can replicate.
