Los Caracoles

Traditional Catalan · Barri Gòtic, Barcelona · €€€

Barcelona institution since 1835. Wood-fired rotisserie chicken visible in the street-level window. Tourist-heavy but quality genuinely maintained.

The Delekta Review

Los Caracoles has been serving on Carrer dels Escudellers in the Barri Gòtic since 1835, which makes it one of Barcelona's oldest restaurants and one of the city's most unmistakable facades — the wood-fired rotisserie spinning whole chickens in the street-level window has been drawing crowds for the better part of two centuries. The menu is traditional and undeniably the draw in name only: caracoles a la llauna, pollastre a l'ast, seafood rice, grilled fish. The warren of dining rooms across multiple floors feels like a preserved fragment of the old city, which is both charm and limitation. Honest assessment: the tourist share is heavy, the prices reflect the address more than the kitchen, and the cooking is solid rather than memorable. You come for the building, the window, the sense of continuity with a Barcelona that barely exists anymore — and on those terms, Los Caracoles still delivers something no contemporary restaurant can replicate.
