Casa Alfonso

Traditional Jamón & Tapas · Eixample, Barcelona · €€

Legendary jamón bar since 1934. Whole legs hanging from the ceiling. Some of Barcelona's best hand-carved Iberian ham. Simple tapas, zero pretension.

The Delekta Review

Casa Alfonso has been carving jamón ibérico on Carrer de Roger de Llúria since 1934, and the room has aged well — dark wood, tiled floor, whole paletas and jamones hanging from the ceiling, a long marble counter where the cortador works bone-in legs to order. The obvious play is a plate of jamón with pa amb tomàquet and a glass of Manzanilla, but the menu extends credibly into Catalan-leaning tapas and mains: croquetes, truita amb ceba, pernil fregit amb ous, a few honest grilled dishes. The bread is good, the tomato is ripe, the ham is cut thin enough that it melts against the warm crust. Prices are fair for the quality of product and the Eixample address. Service tilts old-school Barcelona — efficient, unpretentious, occasionally dry — and the turnover is steady. For a long lunch built around cured meats in a room that has seen Barcelona through several republics, this is among the most reliable choices in the centre.
