Cal Boter

Traditional Catalan Home Cooking · Gràcia, Barcelona · €€

Toni and Encarna opened in an old carpentry in Gràcia in 1986 — now Marta and Pau run it. Esmorzars de forquilla every morning from 9 to noon. Cargols a la llauna, botifarra amb mongetes, xai al forn. One of the last places keeping the fork breakfast tradition alive.

The Delekta Review

An old carpentry in Gràcia, converted in 1986 by Toni and Encarna into what is now one of the neighborhood's last guardians of the esmorzar de forquilla — the Catalan fork breakfast, a dying tradition that Cal Boter refuses to let go of. Every morning from nine to noon, a chalkboard lists dishes that would floor most dinner menus: braised oxtail, tripe with snails, grilled lamb chops, baked salt cod with allioli, stewed pork cheeks. Wine comes in a porró, Catalonia's iconic glass pitcher that makes a glass unnecessary. Guy Fieri showed up for Season 26 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and pronounced the cargols delicious, which is either a compliment or a warning depending on where you stand. The family sources its meat from its own stall at Mercat de Sant Andreu. Encarna still oversees desserts. Now run by Marta and Pau, the second generation, the hand-painted tiles and vintage ads remain. Hearty, honest, exceptional value — and during calçotada season, the place fills with Gràcia families who've been coming for decades.
