Bodega Gol is one of the surviving traditional bodegues in Sant Antoni — the kind of place where vermut still comes from a barrel, the tapes are chalked on a slate, and the patina on the walls is a century of honest accumulation. Sant Antoni's rapid gentrification has swept away many of its traditional spots, but Bodega Gol endures, largely because the locals refuse to let it disappear. The house vermut is the signature — drawn from the barrel and served properly with an olive and a slice of orange, the ratio exactly what it should be. The tapes are the classics: conserves, embotits, a few simple cooked dishes that exist to accompany the drink rather than compete with it. A Sunday morning here is quintessential Barcelona: neighbours greeting each other by name, newspapers spread on the bar, the unhurried rhythm of a city that still knows how to do nothing productively.
