Betlem
Neighbourhood Tapas · Eixample, Barcelona · €€
Quintessential neighbourhood tapas bar. Affordable, friendly, impossible to leave. Fried calamari, Iberian jamón croquetas, steak tartare with smoked eel.
The Delekta Review
Betlem occupies a former 1892 grocer's shop in the Eixample — original tiles, vintage wood fittings, a modernista ghost under the contemporary renovation. The cooking is quintessential neighbourhood tapas done with a little more ambition than the format demands: fried calamari, Iberian jamón croquetes regulars order on every visit, steak tartare with smoked eel, escalivada with anchovies. The wine list leans natural without being ideological about it. Prices are fair for the Eixample, and the atmosphere is genuinely convivial — this is where locals go when they want quality tapas without ceremony. The kind of place that makes you reconsider how good neighbourhood cooking can be when the kitchen actually cares.
