Can Ros has served rice and grilled fish in the Barceloneta since 1911 — four generations of the same family, four rice dishes (paella marinera, arròs de muntanya, arròs negre, arròs de verdures) and a dining room that still looks like it did when the neighbourhood belonged to the fishermen. The fideuà is as serious as anything on the carrer, and the arròs negre has the socarrat that separates honest Barcelona rice from the waterfront trampa. The tiled walls, the black-and-white photographs, the quiet dignity of a family business that has survived every wave of speculation crashing over this strip — all intact. The tourist traffic is real and unavoidable; this is Barceloneta. But the cooking stays honest, the prices are moderate for the neighbourhood, and the rice lands on the table with the weight of a century behind it. For a part of the city where mediocrity has become the norm, that's a genuine defence.
