Bar Jai-Ca
Classic Seafood Tapas · Barceloneta, Barcelona · €€
Barceloneta tapas staple since 1955. Seemingly endless menu of seafood tapas. Authentic local atmosphere, generations of regulars. A genuine piece of old Barceloneta.
The Delekta Review
Bar Jai-Ca has been pouring vermut and sending out seafood tapas on Carrer de Ginebra since 1955, and it remains one of the clearest windows into old Barceloneta as it really is — loud, crowded, efficient, occasionally brusque. The bomba is non-negotiable, the chipirones fritos arrive crisp and sweet, the razor clams are griddled in seconds, and the pica-pica platter of whatever the kitchen has going is the quickest way to understand the place. Waiters shout orders over the din from the covered terrace, which fills within minutes of opening. Prices have crept up with the neighbourhood's fame and quality can wobble on the busiest nights, but on a weekday before 9pm, with a cold beer and a plate of boquerones en vinagre, this is still Barceloneta functioning as it was designed to — generations of regulars elbow-to-elbow with curious visitors, nobody pretending it's anything other than what it is.
