Fonda Espanya
Catalan Modernist · El Raval, Barcelona · €€€
Historic 160-year-old restaurant by chef Martín Berasategui in an ornate modernist dining room, honoring traditional fonda style with contemporary creativity.
The Delekta Review
Fonda Espanya may have the most beautiful restaurant interior in Barcelona — a 1903 modernista masterpiece by Lluís Domènech i Montaner inside the Hotel España, with sgraffito murals by Eusebi Arnau that turn the dining room into a museum you're allowed to eat in. Martín Berasategui oversees the cooking; the kitchen executes polished Catalan-Mediterranean dishes with the seriousness the setting demands. The menú del día at lunch is the best way in — priced reasonably for this level, and a genuine value when you factor in where you're eating. Dinner prices reflect the pedigree and the architecture. For an address where history, craftsmanship and cooking converge in equal measure, Fonda Espanya is Barcelona at its most magnificent.
