El Xampanyet

Classic Tapas & Cava · El Born, Barcelona · €€

Blue-tiled El Born shrine pouring house cava from the barrel since 1929, with marble tables, legendary Cantabrian anchovies, and a lively mix of locals and visitors. No reservations — arrive early or queue.

The Delekta Review

Since 1929, the same blue-tiled bar on Carrer de Montcada has been pouring house cava from the barrel into small glasses at prices that haven't followed the Born's gentrification curve. That's the whole pitch — and the reason El Xampanyet keeps drawing three generations of Catalans alongside the tourists who've since discovered it. The cava is cheap, cold, endlessly refillable, and better than it has any right to be. The anchor tapas are Cantabrian anchovies, though the marble counter works through a full repertoire of Catalan bites: tortilla, pan con tomate, conserves straight from the tin. Marble bar, wooden barrels, zero renovations since the Franco era. The honest truth is the clientele has shifted — queues form before opening and the room now skews mixed rather than exclusively local. Cash only, closed Mondays. Best mid-afternoon on a weekday, when the bar quietly returns to the neighbourhood.
