The Delekta Review

The building dates to 1908, when it sold ice and served tapas. The Janiu family later ran it for forty years, famous for the best anchovies and vermut in Barcelona. It reopened in 2015 as El Sortidor de la Filomena Pagès — named for the grandmother of one of the new owners, who fed neighbours during the postwar years. The Modernista essence is intact: coloured glass windows, cast-iron pillars, a tiled bar, and the original freezer where neighbours once came for ice, all protected heritage. Chef David Sanmartin offers dishes of traditional inspiration with a touch of modernity, built from quality market products. The terrace on Plaça del Sortidor — one of Poble Sec's most beautiful squares — is the real draw in summer. Canelons, seasonal Catalan dishes, honest cooking under the plane trees. A neighbourhood anchor where history is lived in, not curated.
