The Delekta Review

Bar Velódromo has been on Muntaner since 1933 — it nearly died in 2000 when the original owners retired, then Cerveses Moritz rescued the premises and reopened in 2009 with a full renovation that kept the Art Deco bones intact. The sweeping staircase, the chrome, the polished wood — all original. Jordi Vilà of Alkimia fame serves as gastronomic director, and the kitchen runs a full menu from early morning until the small hours, which in Barcelona is a rarer proposition than it should be. The croquettes — squid ink, Iberian ham — are routinely cited among the city's best. The macaroni gratin with roast chicken is comfort food elevated to precision. Moritz unpasteurised pours straight from the factory. For ninety years this has been a meeting place for writers, architects, and thinkers; it still feels like that kind of room, especially mid-afternoon when the light hits the windows right.
