The Delekta Review
Sant Carles 15 in the Barceloneta was the building that housed the electrical generator that lit the neighborhood at the turn of the twentieth century. When the generator went, the room kept the name, and the bar that opened in 1908 has been here ever since. Victoria Jaén and Agapito Soler bought it in 2006 and handed the keys to their children Daniel and Judith and son-in-law Toni Pérez in 2020; the longtime staff who put the place on the tourist map years before that — Sarai, Javier, Coqui and Tere — are still on the floor. The original 1908 furnishings work as installation art that happens to be open to customers: modernist wrought-iron green doors, a white marble bar, wood-clad ice refrigerators, cast-iron table bases, wine vats, the decommissioned generator still in the basement. The room is listed on the Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya. Repsol Solete in 2021; Soletes con Solera in the 2024 heritage cohort. Vermut casero by the bottle on the table, measured at the bill. Ensaladilla de cangrejo on pa amb tomàquet that Time Out singles out as the house plate.
What works
A living museum that hasn't aestheticized itself for the tourists who already find it — the 1908 modernist fittings are in daily use, the marble bar is the working bar, and the tortilla is still cooked by the retired employee who can't quite let it go. Repsol's two Soletes (the 2021 award and the 2024 heritage cohort) are the institutional shorthand for what this place is. The ensaladilla and the bomba both earn their reputation, and the vermut-by-the-bottle billing practice is preserved as living tradition, not period charm. Working-bar prices in a neighborhood that has otherwise tilted decisively tourist.
Before you go
Tiny and gets very crowded — weekend vermouth hour means queues and standing room only. Closed Mondays; evenings only on Friday and Saturday (lunch-only midweek). Walk-in only, no online booking. The food program is substantial but the rhythm is bar-paced, not sit-down dinner — go for tapas and vermut, not for a long evening. Heavily touristed (Barceloneta + heritage status + every English-language guide includes it), but the weekday morning local-mix is still there for anyone willing to time it right.
