Federal Café

Brunch & All-day Café · Barri Gòtic, Barcelona · €€

Australian-style brunch café in the Gothic Quarter. Excellent coffee, avocado toast, and eggs dishes. Rooftop terrace. Barcelona's pioneering brunch spot.

The Delekta Review

Federal Café pioneered brunch culture in Barcelona from its Poble Sec original well before avocado toast and flat whites had become ubiquitous here. The Australian-influenced all-day menu arrived early enough to shape how a generation of Barcelona residents now thinks about weekend mornings — a cultural import that quietly changed the city without ever asking permission. Multiple locations have followed, including the Gòtic branch with its rooftop terrace, but the Poble Sec original keeps the most character: the narrow space, the neighbourhood feel, the sense of being where it started. The coffee is genuinely good, sourced with care; the food is reliable rather than revelatory, but the execution stays solid after all these years. Eggs done properly, decent sandwiches, salads that taste like someone cared. Some argue Federal started something Barcelona didn't need. Others say they simply recognised what was coming. Either way, on a sunny weekend morning with a flat white and the paper on the terrace, the formula is hard to argue with.
