The Delekta Review
Born from a food truck, Masala 73 on Carrer de Balmes applies seasonal thinking and contemporary technique to a cuisine that too often gets served as a cliché in Europe. The curries are the anchor — properly spiced, cooked with patience, respected as main dishes rather than exotic curiosities — while the tandoor work (lamb chops with real char, chicken tikka that doesn't taste of food colouring) and the handmade breads complete the picture. Vegetarian plates stand on their own without the apologetic tone that haunts most subcontinental restaurants. The two-floor Eixample space is painted in Hindi graffiti and bold colours, playful rather than theme-park, and the lunch menu at around 11 euros remains one of the better deals in this part of the city. Dinner lands in the 20–25 range. In a Barcelona that is surprisingly short on serious Indian cooking, Masala 73 is a genuine antidote — accessible enough for a Tuesday night, ambitious enough to justify the trip across town.
